The Way We Sea

GYOtaku INformation

Join us for a family friendly, hands-on gyotaku experience!

Gyotaku is the traditional Japanese art of fish printing, originally developed by fisherpeople to record and commemorate their catches. In Hawaiʻi, locals have embraced this unique art form to preserve the memory of their fishing tales. 


Information:

  • $65 per person, $50 keiki discount (14 and under)
  • 90 minute session, up to 6 people per session
  • All materials are provided- fish, octopus, paper, ink & supplie


What to Expect:

  • Learn and explore the art of gyotaku and meet new fishy friends
  • Hear stories from the sea, discover why every catch has a tale to tell from 3 generations of Open Mato lawaiʻa (Denis, Sandra, Mato, & Sandy)
  • Watch live demonstrations of the printing process
  • Create your own gyotaku print using locally sourced marine life
  • Take home an unique piece of art made by you! (2-4 prints per person)
  • No experience is necessary
  • Just bring yourself and a willingness to get a little inked.

  • Payment can be made via Venmo (preferred), PayPal, or Credit Card
  • Payment must be received within 24 hours of booking to secure your spot
  • Reservations are not confirmed until payment is received
  • Unpaid reservations may be released to other participants
